Drama Character Analysis .
Assignment: Think of a modern character in a movie, theatrical production, video game, or television show that is similar to a character in Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Macbeth. Craft an essay that compares the two characters, quoting from both the modern drama you have chosen and Shakespeare’s Macbeth to prove your comparisons.
Parameters:
•Write at least 5-pages, not including works cited.
•Use proper MLA Format.Quote from Macbeth at least 7 times, weaving the author’s words into your OWN sentence, and always explaining HOW the quote compares with the modern character you have chosen. Also use 7 quotes from the modern drama.
•Paraphrase 4 times from at least two (2) articles from the LSCC library databases. These paraphrases need to be integrated into the body paragraphs. You may use the information to bolster your claim or to refute it.
Introductory Paragraph:
◦Must include a thesis sentence as the last sentence of the paragraph. This sentence must name both Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Macbeth and the name of the chosen modern character with the drama to which they belong. Example:
◾Iago, from Shakespeare’s Othello, the Moor of Venice, shares many of the same characteristics as Scar, from Disney’s The Lion King.
◦Must start with a “hook” that captures the audience’s attention, NOT a sweeping generalization like, “since the dawn of time, man has struggled with his own mortality.” If you use a quote or statistic, make sure you include an entry on the works cited page for it.
◦Bridge – discuss the topic to connect your hook to your thesis.
Body Paragraphs –
•First, make sure each body paragraph develops one criterion for comparison. You will need to have four to five body paragraphs. For each one, open with a concise claim. Please keep the claim clear and concise. Then your burden is to provide evidence and explanations to prove the claim is valid. ◦Both Iago and Scar are motivated by jealousy.
◦Besides displaying jealousy, both Iago and Scar manipulate others.
◦Another negative trait Iago and Scar share is deceitfulness.
◦Finally, Iago andScar also show little remorse for all the turmoil they create.
•Second, begin with the Shakespearean character. Provide 1-2 quotes from the play to show jealousy, for instance. Then provide a paraphrase from a critic on the character. Provide your own explanations interspersed with the evidence.
•Third, transition to the contemporary character. Provide 1-2 quotes from the play to show jealousy, for instance. Then provide a paraphrase from a critic on the character. Provide your own explanations interspersed with the evidence.
•Finally, conclude the paragraph. emphasizing that this trait is universal and plagues all people.
Note – If any body paragraph is too long, it is acceptable to re-paragraph when you transition to the contemporary character.
Conclusion Paragraph:
◦Must show why your comparison is important—one of the purposes of this essay is “proving” Shakespeare is still relevant today. Use your conclusion to finalize this “proof.”
◦Show how Shakespeare influences modern screen writers and playwrights in their character creations.
◦Must avoid simply restating the thesis statement and summarizing the essay.
