The CSUSM Beyond the Stereotype campaign calls attention to the issue of cultural appropriation and stereotypes. Check out the poster campaign and accompanying discussion of cultural appropriation to learn more about this topic.

Halloween is a time when this issue can be particularly visible. Students at Ohio University have created a campaign similar to CSUSM’s focusing specifically about cultural appropriation and Halloween costumes called “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume.”

After viewing these two sets of posters, read this brief article, Halloween Don’t’s: Avoid Racially Offensive Costumes.

Write a post, approximately 250 words in length, in which you:

define cultural appropriation in your own words
explain how racially-themed Halloween costumes relate to cultural appropriation, using examples
explain your own position on this issue, including how you would respond to counter-arguments from people who might not agree with you
