chemistry/Problem Set #03.Chapters 19.3, 20, 21

complete the following questions on separate, lined paper. Organize the questions in the order they are given here, making sure to box/circle all answers and use appropriate units when necessary. Some questions may require you to use a calculator or research necessary information. This information should usually be easily found within the text or a quick web search.
You may complete this assignment using any assistance necessary, including any other individuals (professors, tutors, students, etc.). However, all work must be shown for every problem. Working in groups is acceptable, so long as every student contributes to the group.

Chapter 19

1.) The solubility of zinc oxalate is 7.9×10-3 M at 18°C. Calculate its Ksp

2.) Find the molar solubility of BaCrO4 (Ksp = 2.1×10-10) in
a.) pure water.
b.) 1.5×10-3 M Na2CrO4.

Chapter 20

5.) For each of the following pairs, select which molecule will have the HIGHER entropy:
i. PCl3 (g) or PCl5 (g)
ii. CaF2 (s) or BaCl2 (s)
iii. Br2 (g) or Br2 (l)

6.) For the following reaction, calculate the value of ?Sorxn at 25oC.
2 NaOH (s) + CO2 (g) ? Na2CO3 (s) + H¬2O (l)

?SoNaOH = 64.5 J/mol*K ?So Na2CO3 = 139 J/mol*K
?So CO2 = 213.7 J/mol*K ?So¬H2O = 69.9 J/mol*K
7.) Determine the ?Gorxn for the following reaction at 298 K
2 NO (g) + O2 (g) ? 2NO2 (g) ?Sorxn = -146.5 J/K ?Horxn= -114.2 kJ

Chapter 21

8.) Balance the following skeleton reactions (in acidic solutions, if needed) and identifying the oxidizing and reducing agents:
a. O2 (g) + NO (g) ? NO3- (aq)
b. CrO42- (aq) + Cu (s) ? Cr(OH)3 (s) + Cu(OH)2 (s)
c. AsO43- (aq) + NO2- (aq) ? AsO2- (aq) + NO3- (aq)

9.) A voltaic cell is constructed with an Ag/Ag+ half-cell and a Pb/Pb2+ half-cell. The silver electrode is positive.
a. Write balanced half-reactions and the overall reaction.
b. Diagram the cell, labeling electrodes with their charges and showing the directions of electron flow in circuit and of cation and anion flow in the salt bridge.
c. What is the electrical potential (voltage) of this voltaic cell?
