I’d like you to write an essay in which you use what you know about Chaplin’s artistry from the textbook to prove his influence on modern day comedy. In other words, you will discuss Chaplin’s influence on a comedian or a comic artwork (such as a comedy show, a sitcom, a comedic film, etc.) with the textbook as your supporting evidence. I expect to see a clear thesis statement – i.e. a sentence that makes clear what you intend to prove throughout the paper, clear topic sentences for each paragraph about what you intend to develop in that paragraph towards your ultimate thesis, and clear evidence that supports your idea. Of course, you should, early in the paper, describe the comic artwork/comedian you intend to address, but BRIEFLY. In terms of showing Chaplin’s influence on your example, make sure you stick to HOW you see Chaplin’s influence in the work, rather than what the content of the example is. In other words, don’t use the entire paper to summarize what happens in the particular art work, but look at how the comedian or the performer uses their body to do so, since that is what Chaplin did so well, and what is looked at so clearly in Kamin’s study of him. 3-5 pages minimum, 12 point font, double-spaced, MLA format for in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Make sure you cite the example as well as the textbook. You don’t need to use any other sources besides Kamin, the example, and anything you use to summarize the artwork, but you can if you’d like. Do not OVER-rely on sources, make sure to let your ideas sing!
