Excavation
Problems
1. Our foundation requires that we drill fifty-eight (58) 2’-7” diameter holes into the earth to accommodate our special footing. On average each hole will be 14’-0” deep. Because they’re drilled holes, we don’t need to worry about repose.
Contractor Assumptions
Swell factor: 10% Truck capacity: 7 CY
a. How many dump truck loads are required to move the excavated earth off the site? (EA)
2. The construction drawings indicate a 6” slab-on-grade (S.O.G.) which measures 223’-3”L x 110’-5”W. It requires 5” of compacted fill beneath it.
Contractor Assumptions
Compaction factor: 95%
Truck capacity: 10 CY
a. How many dump truck loads of compacted fill do you need? (EA)
3. Refer to Figure 1. The excavation is a simple trench.
a. How much earth must be stored on-site as the result of the excavation for the footing? (CY)
Contractor Assumptions
Swell Factor: 10%
Backhoe bucket width: 24”
Working space: none required
Repose angle: not applicable
4. Refer to Figure 2. Utilizing the information provided on the contour plan, calculate the total fill, total cut and the net difference for the cells A, B, C, and D. Reference the take-off sheet shown in Chapter 2, Figure 2 (p. 17) as an example layout. However, use four
(4) points, not five (5). Also, while the book indicates creating a separate table for cut and fill, you may combine cut and fill into one table using + (fill) and – (cut) signs.
a. Total cut (CY)
b. Total fill (CY)
c. Net difference (CY)

Lab Assignment #2
CEMT 28000 – Quantity Survey
Fall 2015
5. Using the attached Medical Office Building drawings (Drawings 5, 6, & 7), calculate the total number of dump trucks required to remove the dirt for the wall footing. Assume you need to excavate down to the bottom of the footing for the entire trash enclosurefootprint.
Contractor Assumptions
Swell factor: 15%
Angle of repose: 1:1 (45d) Dump truck capacity: 10 CY Working space: 2’-0”
Top of slab = top of grade
Contract Document Information
Top of foundation (T.O.F) elevation: +104.833’ Top of grade elevation: +104.333’
6. Refer to the Foundation Plan for the Public Library (Sheet S2.1) and Section 7/S2.1 (below). Determine the amount of excavation required for the entire building footprint. Tip: the building plan is essentially a right triangle. The excavation depth is the same for the entire footprint. (CY)
Contractor Assumptions
Swell factor: 15%
Angle of repose: 1:1 (45d) Working space: 1’-0”
Excavation depth = bottom of footing
Contract Document Information
Top of slab elevation: +100.0’ Top of grade elevation: +99.333’
Overall exterior dimensions align with face of foundation wall
