Case Study: Telework

Paper details:
In 2006, the US General Services Administration conducted a cost-benefits analysis of telework (what we now call BYOD, mobile workplaces, and a variety of other names), using the Value Measuring Methodology. The GSA Telework/AWA Library (Links to an external site.) page is the home for that analysis report, ranging from executive summary on up.

For a detailed, stubby-pencil demonstration of VMM at work – in ways that influenced the way many in Government now view BYOD – you can browse through these charts:

Case Study Challenge: How do 10 years of “progress” support or invalidate the logic and reasoning behind this analysis?

Clearly, a study based in 2005 data predates a lot of the changes that have made the “new commonplace” seem so different. For one thing, the basic cost elements have changed in profound ways– some by decreasing, others by increasing, either in cost or their respective weightings in the decision process. Individual technologies and the work patterns and person-to-person interactions have changed a lot as BYO, SAAS, PAAS, and IAAS have become more of the norm.

Or have they really changed all that much?

YOUR TASK: review this web site, the reports, and the briefing material, with your focus being the underlying logic of the analytical approach and methodology.

Suggestion: use a similar frame of mind, thought process, and outline approach as you did with Activity 3.5’s Case Study. Analyze, think and write as if you have to convince your boss (and your boss’ boss) of the logical, reasonable nature of your findings and conclusions. Perhaps you need to convince your boss that this GSA methodology is still sound, and has direct applicability at your place of work… or, that it no longer holds water and should be abandoned.

FORMAT REQUIREMENTS: The Case Study is one example of how to use the logic of the APA rules of research while thinking, reading, analyzing and synthesizing, as well as an opportunity to use its rules of construction and formatting. Proper APA format (Links to an external site.) is required:

You’ll have to use sources for information and analysis/argument and findings; make sure you lay credit where credit is due by using in-line citations when you use your sources, and include a References section that provides your readers the full and appropriate information about your sources. Your document must be double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, with page header containing Running Head and page numbers. Spelling is important, and yes, so is grammar! (Title Page and Abstract not required for this Module activity)
