case study

DIRECTIONS AND GOALS
1. Students will begin by analyzing the case, selecting important areas for the client in the case, and prioritizing those topics. Each student will be responsible for one topic. It is important that the analysis result in topics that are not too narrow or too broad. In doing research on the topic, you must use current journals and research. Remember we are looking for the evidence. Consider also current guidelines, standards and recommendations for practice; you can also consult websites and key informants. The research on the topic needs to be in-depth and requires that you use a minimum of five resources and references. This resembles an in-depth literature review but needs to also include resources useful for clinicians.

2. The goal of this case analysis is to address the most salient, important topics in health promotion; you are responsible for presenting all of the important information that a health care provider needs to know about the topic. Each group also needs to engage the class in discussion; for example, most topics have two sides—do you treat stress with pharmacologic agents or mind body? Each presenter is required to engage the class in a high level of discussion and discourse. Each presenter is to pose at least three questions to the class for discussion. You may work with your Section Instructor on developing these questions. The information needs to be relevant to the case in point. It may be that students or faculty ask for clarification, and the presenter will have to do further research to clarify.
3. Therefore, the assignment requires that you present information above that basic level. For example, everyone is well aware of the complications from obesity and smoking. We are looking for information – evidence – about the latest research, current treatments and interventions as well as recommendations and controversies.
4. Remember this is health promotion—primary prevention. With each case consider primary care needs including screening and evidence to back up your recommendations, and theory to facilitate behavior change.
SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION
1. Each student will submit a two- to three-page paper on his or her topic summarizing the important points for FNP practice, controversial areas, and current research as well as resources and websites that are useful to providers. The bibliography submitted with the paper must be annotated. Below are references on developing an annotated bibliography and following APA formatting.
