Case Studies and Essay Questions

This three essay questions. Your answers to these questions should be in essay format and your answers should be 1-3 pages for each question. Cite any sources that you use to answer the questions. Avoid using material directly quoted from the textbook and the course Power Point slides. It is fine to use material from these sources but this information should be paraphrased and not directly quoted.

Question 1: Research Ethics Case Study
Dr. Howe is an assistant professor who has been working at Midwest State University for 2 years. He recently received funding from the National Institute of Health to conduct research examining the role a specific protein plays in the formation of lung tumors. Her research will use cell cultures and mice but not human subject. Dr. Howe has two graduate students and an undergraduate student who will work with her on this project.
Identify three potential ethically issues that could arise in this research situation. For each issue identify the potential problem, explain who is responsible for making sure the problem does not occur or who is liable if the problem does occur and how the problem can be addressed or prevented. Also, identify any laws, regulation or policies that exist that are associated with this issue (not all issues will have these).

Question 2: Biomedical Case Study
Read “Is it Ethical to Patent or Copyright Genes, Embryos, or Their Parts” (pdf copy of this case ) Provide background on this issue. What are the ethical issues on both sides of this argument and how does the other side counter each argument?
You can use sources outside of this case study but this is not required. The information you need for this discussion can be found in the case study.

Question 3: Environmental Case Study
Read “Nature Red in Tooth, Claw, and Bullet: Hunting and Human Presence in Nature” from your textbook (Boundries: A Casebook in Environmental Ethics by Gudorf and Huchingson p 242). Identify four arguments for and four arguments against hunting. For each argument state if the argument is anthropocentric, biocentric or ecocentric. Make sure you provide information to support your claim that the argument is anthropocentric, biocentric or ecocentric.
