Career planning

Considering all of this, think about where you see yourself one (1) year (working on a Maternity floor), 5-years (become an advance practice register nurse (APRN)), and 10-years from now (become a certified nurse midwife (CNM)).
Investigate the area of nursing you wish to be in the coming years. Write a career plan that details the goals
you want to reach at each of these points in time. Address how you will achieve those goals. Goals and
strategies should be as specific as possible- use the SMART model for goal setting. In your career plan,
include a timeline that shows the pivotal points required to achieve your plan. Discuss the support,
resources (including time and money), educational development, additional training, etc.; you anticipate
needing to fulfill your career plan.

CAREER PLANNING

Objective: Assessment 2 is a portfolio (40%) which contains evidence of how you have evaluated your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the chosen job and what you need to build on to get yourself the kind of job you want. This includes how you can bolster your CV and how to present yourself better in applications and selection process (e.g: interviews, selection tests)

Tasks:
1. You will need to undertake both Profiling for Success questionnaires and read your personal reports that are generated from these exercises before completing the reflection below. (NB: After taking each test you will receive a report by email. You should save these as you will need to refer to these in order to complete your assignment below)—
2. You will also need to think about presentation from industry speaker(s) and refer to what you have learnt from them both from practice week 1 and 2.
3. Ensure you answer each question fully and refer to the marking criteria. This reflection will form part of your practice week second assessment.

SECTION 1 (25%)
Your profile and its appeal to a potential employer
• Describe your profile from ‘Type Dynamics Indicator’ report in your own words.
• What aspects of your profile would be attractive to an employer? (Think about what you heard at the INDUSTRY SPEAKER presentations with regards to what employers want)

SECTION 2 (40%)
Identifying and developing your employability skills
• After undertaking the ‘Skills Audit’ in practice week 1, what skills do you have difficulty in evidencing?
• Why do you think this is?
• What activities can you engage in to further your skills portfolio?
• What areas of development does your ‘Type Dynamics Indicator’ report identify?
• What can you do to improve within the areas identified?
• From the industry speaker presentation what skills were highlighted as essential?
• Did any of the skills mentioned surprise you? If so why?
• What skills do you think you need to develop to meet Employer’s requirements?

SECTION 3 (35%)
Specific roles
• From the results of the ‘Careers Interest Inventory’ report, choose 3 jobs that really appeal to you. (Choose 3 jobs from any of the career themes generated or the combined list within the report)
• What are the main skills and attributes required for each role?
• How do your skills and attributes match the roles?
• What skills/attributes can you evidence using S.T.A.R. that will really impress an employer? (Again avoid clichés and think about the advice industry speaker gave in the presentations in practice week 1 and 2.)
S.T.A.R. is a method of evidencing your skills writing in the format of Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Situation – what was the situation and when did it take place?
Task – what task was it, and what was the objective?
Action – what action did you take to achieve this?
Results – what happened as a result of your action?
• In general which skills do you still need to develop in particular to shine in these roles?
• How would you develop these specific skills and attributes? (think about activities/work experience/volunteering you can partake in)
