Club It Part III
Resources: Club IT, Part One; Club IT, Part Two; Club IT, Part Three
Prepare a 4- to 7-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation addressing the following:
• Identify the ROI and NPV of the wireless order-taking system. Discuss some of the intangibles Lisa needs to consider and make a recommendation as to whether Lisa should order such a system.
• Research some executive dashboard products, identify information that Lisa and Ruben would likely find useful presented in a dashboard, and how they would use the information. Make recommendations as to which product you would recommend for Club IT.
• Choose one of the technology project development methodologies described in the readings and explain how you would go about the systems analysis effort. Identify what information is needed for whom, when, and in what format. Additionally, consider what major stakeholders you would interview, and how you would proceed to gather information to make an informed decision.
• Provide a description of how you envision this project would proceed through the SDLC—what would happen in each phase?

Club IT, Part One
Club IT is a downtown music venue managed and owned by Ruben Keys and Lisa Tejada. They both graduated with degrees in Business Administration in 2005, and decided to follow their dream to open a nightclub. During college, they supported themselves by working as musicians, Lisa playing jazz violin and Ruben on drums. They learned quite a bit about nightclub operations from experience, in addition to business principles learned from their studies.
Lisa and Ruben have just completed extensive remodeling of the interior of Club IT and are pleased with the results. Its high ceilings and high energy lighting creates an ambience of fun and energy. For music, they hire live bands on Fridays and Saturdays, then have a live DJ Tuesdays through Thursdays. They are closed on Sundays. The DJ uses MP3 playlists to play hip-hop, techno, electronic, and some Top 40s.
Lisa and Ruben run the office and maintain all financial and business-related records. They realize that while the resources they spent on remodeling are paying off, their information management is lagging behind. Their next project is a full analysis of their information needs; to start it off, they have hired you as an intern.
To prepare for your first day of work, you and a few friends decide to spend a Friday evening at Club IT. Your visit is enjoyable—you have made some friends, learned several new dance steps, and rocked with the great band. Although, when reporting to work on Monday afternoon, you wonder how much information technology a nightclub may possibly need, and if there will be enough information and technology analysis opportunities to justify your internship at Club IT.
Sitting in the empty club a few hours before opening, you have your initial meeting with Ruben and Lisa. They provide background on the club and an overview of their need to boost their information technology, data management, and decision-making capabilities.
After reading Ch. 2 in the Rainer and Turban text, you have seen many real business cases where IT has helped organizations achieve strategic objectives. The real estate industry has seen a major transformation with electronic communications and the Web, the airlines are continuing to innovate, and even your course registration process is getting easier with online options. While Club IT is without the IT resources of K-mart or Sears, it is more agile and may be able to take advantage of its information base to help build a community with the support of IT.

Club IT, Part Two
Over the last few months of your internship at Club IT, you have learned much about the nightclub business and have discovered opportunities for Club IT to improve its information technology capabilities. Ruben and Lisa have asked you to meet with them next week to provide an assessment of their current information systems and a recommendation for upgrading and improving their information management capabilities. You have some definite ideas on how IT could be improved at Club IT, and you also realize it takes thorough analysis and planning to be successful.
You have interviewed Ruben and the rest of the staff at Club IT and have compiled the following notes:
• Club IT’s customers are mostly net generation and millennials. They regularly use mobile technologies such as Blackberrys, PDAs, camera phones, and other wireless communication devices. Online shopping is a regular part of their lives.
• Few nightclubs have taken advantage of various e-commerce activities, and Ruben sees this as an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage in dealing with suppliers and guests. Ruben asks you to identify some new e-commerce technologies and applications to help build Club IT’s clientele and community, and to make their business processes more efficient.
• Currently, Club IT sells advance tickets to its special Friday and Saturday night concerts by phone or in person. Ruben wants to set up a Web site to sell tickets, so guests may have unlimited self-service access.
• Opportunities exist for streamlining the ordering process through B2B ecommerce. Sysco, for example, is a major restaurant supplier in North America, which has an extensive Web site (http://www.sysco.com/customer-solutions.html) with many online products and services for small and large food and beverage operations.
Using the information you have gathered from your review of the Club IT Web site and interviews with Ruben and the staff, evaluate the IT status of the business.

Club IT, Part Three
From your perspective as an outsider, Club IT seems successful to you. The club is busy in the evenings, the people are eating, drinking, and having fun—the staff is congenial and hard-working. Although, on the financial side, Lisa and Ruben would prefer to see the business earn more profits and possibly open a second Club IT.
Ruben would like to proceed by implementing an inventory system that communicates directly with the supply chain: vendors, distributors, and shippers. Ruben believes that the most difficult part of this project is at the beginning—identifying the requirements of an inventory system that meets the needs of the business.
Lisa is considering a wireless order-taking system, and she has asked you to do a cost analysis of acquiring it. Consider the following information in your analysis:
• The acquisition cost is $35,000 paid at the time of installation.
• It reduces the wait staff by one person: Figure $10 per hour, or 2020 hours per year + 18% benefits.
• Money costs are 7%
• The system may become obsolete in three years.
