An essay should be argumentative, rather than descriptive or narrative. If you’re not arguing or demonstrating a point, then you’re doing something wrong. So – always write an introduction that states your argument clearly. The Introduction should start with a brief ID, & then a concise & clear presentation of your argument (I will demonstrate that ____________) & a list evidence (this is evidenced by a, b, c, & d). You have to tell the reader what you’re going to convince him of before your start. Don’t leave it up to him to infer what it is that you’re arguing for or against; he’ll wind up reading 3-4-5 pages before grasping your objective in this paper. Reading in the dark for so long makes it harder for the reader to stay focused & interested; it makes him wonder “why is this significant?”, “why should this interest me?” You should answer these questions for the reader up front (the less the reader thinks for himself, the better). This way, the reader is able to keep on track while reading; see the relevance/significance of anecdotes/evidence/argumentation that you present along the way.
