Shakespeare’s tragedies are recognized for their powerful motifs that enhance the depth of the plot and the theme of the play. In a thoughtful, well-developed, and well-organized essay, identify one of the major motifs we have been studying in The Tragedy of Macbeth, and explain how Shakespeare develops it throughout the play. Support your analysis with reference to specific language and/or poetic devices that illustrate the motif. Be sure to correctly cite the line(s) you quote. (Note: Some motifs overlap, but for the sake of clarity and organization, stick to one; don’t try to explain them all in one essay.) *Remember: you do not have to write about the motif you were assigned.

Tips
Think through your ideas and plan out your essay before you begin writing, and make sure you read back over the essay when you’re done. This can and should be answered in one cohesive essay; it should not be merely a list of examples. Choose a few solid examples that best illustrate your point and develop them well.
Make sure you have a clear controlling idea. Remember, if you need to, you can and should revise your controlling idea and introduction after you’ve finished writing the essay in order to ensure that they correspond to the essay as a whole.
Do NOT use first person pronouns (I, me, we, us, our, ours). This is a formal, academic essay, and the tone and diction should, therefore, be formal.
