Benefits of Nurse Mentoring

Review of literature:includes information from each reference that provides the context for how the author or authors used the concept but the emphasis is on the

antecedents, criteria, and consequences that you identified
Organize your review by disciplines or bodies of literature. End each section with a summary of common antecedents, criteria, and consequences from that discipline
Write a summary of your review that compares what you found out about the concept across the disciplines
ANTECEDENT, CRITERIA, AND CONSEQUENCE TABLE: provide a 3column table with your final list of antecedent, criteria, and consequences that you have synthesized and

condensed from your review. A word or phrase can only be in one column. The condensed list can be single words or short phrases. (5-6of each) the words or phrases must

describe the concept across the disciplines.
RATIONALE: the rationale for selection section is where you explain how you got to your final list. Discuss why you chose the specific antecedents, criteria, and

consequences listed in the above columns. This is very important because it helps explain the process of synthesis that went into this activity. Discuss how you did

this and give rationale for what you included and what you did not.
My original list was:
ANTECEDENT: disengagement, job dis satisfaction, stress, overwhelmed, resignation, burnout
CRITERIA: organizational commitment, support, time, educational opportunities, interest, motivation
CONSEQUENCE:nurse retention, job satisfaction, empowerment, avoid cost of new employee orientation, confidence, trust
(I don’t think I understood the idea of criteria when I made this list in week 1 which I had to turn in )

THEORETICAL DEFINITION: of the concept comprised of your criteria linked together in a sentence. This should include all of the criteria. If you find you have to use

other descriptive words to make the definition make sense, consider the possibility that these words may be criteria. This definition should flow from and be the

culmination of the work you have done in the analysis. Be sure the definition tells what the concept is.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION: provide an operational definition of the concept with empirical indicators. This definition should be congruent with the theoretical definition

but will be much narrower and only true in specific situations. The definition is how you can see the criteria of the concept in a specific clinical situation or

measure the concept in a research study. It may not be applicable for all uses of the concept.

CONCLUSION: concludes the paper with a summary that focuses on the conclusions you have drawn from the concept analysis. Specifically talk about the questions or

issues it raised. Elaborate on what you have learned about this concept that you will be able to use in your practice. Describe specifically what you have learned that

you can apply in practice by providing an example of your concept in clinical practice.

GRADING:
INTRODUCTION: states topic and previews structure of paper. Rationale clearly ties concept to plans. Includes multiple supporting details and/or examples.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE BREADTH &DEPTH: includes different uses of the concepts from at least 5 or more areas of the literature. Includes multiple supporting details

and/or examples. Reviewed at least 4 different sources for each discipline with at least 6 for nursing.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE ANALYSIS & LOGIC: train of thought is clear and has an obvious emphasis. There is clear evidence the writer has analyzed sources. Terms are

reported logically and accurately. Terms clearly flow out of the literature.
SUMMARY AND TABLE: effectively compares and contrasts terms from disciplines. Table formatted correctly. The list is logical and reflects references.
RATIONALE FOR SELECTION: rationale clearly supports selection of term. Clearly supports exclusion of characteristics. Clearly and succinctly explains characteristics.

Reflects thorough analysis and accurate synthesis.
DEFINITIONS OF CONCEPT: Theoretical definition is clear and concise. All criteria are evident in definition. Operational definition includes empirical indicators and

is congruent with theoretical definition.
SUMMARY: clearly defines implications of concept to nursing practice. Makes a strong connection between learning and practice. The summary is strong and succinct.

I had chosen management discipline and education as my 2nd discipline and how if affects nurse mentoring. Now I’m thinking maybe I should use physicians as my 2nd

discipline and how they also can influence the mentoring of the nurse by being supportive, engaging and mentoring or should I go with mentoring in the health field?

Mentoring not just nurses but leaders and doctors in addition to nurses?
I’ve been all over the place with this concept and cannot grasp it!!
