Thanks for working my paper.
For this assignment you will choose a Beatles’ song, and compare your perceptions of the song with a listener’s experience in the 1960s. The paper will have two parts:
Part I
Describe the song in terms of its musical elements (as we have been doing in lecture and section). Based on your description, argue what meaning you think this song has, supporting your argument with specific musical evidence (details).
Part II
Discuss how the experience of listening to this song in the 1960s, either in the United States or the United Kingdom, might have differed from yours. For this comparison you will need to consider your own stance as a listener as well. In particular, consider how this song might have had a different meaning for a listener in the 1960s.
You should use readings from Can’t Buy Me Love (and The Beatles: Paperback Writer, if appropriate) in your discussion of listening contexts in the 1960s. You may also use Jonathan Gould’s discussion of your chosen song in your discussion of the song’s meaning. You are not required to do any further research for this paper. Footnote quotations from the texts, as well as any information from class lectures.
The final paper should be 4-5 pages long (not counting the appendix with the lyrics of your song, or the “Works Cited” page); plan to spend at least two pages describing and discussing the words and music of your chosen song in detail.
[Formatting questions: 12-point font. Double-spaced. Do not add extra space between paragraphs, or use a larger font for any reason (footnotes should use 10-point font). For specific information on footnote/reference and other questions of format, ask your TA what she or he prefers.]
