The Case of Barnaby Consulting Corp.
Lincoln Frazer, director of recruiting for Barnaby Consulting Corp., has just come from a meeting with the directors of marketing and human resources. Marketing Director Martha Reynolds called the meeting to report that several clients have recently complained about the interpersonal skills of Barnaby’s consultants. To help eliminate this problem, Martha has asked the human resources and recruiting directors to review their practices to make sure that Barnaby is hiring consultants with the needed skills to communicate with clients well and make sure that current consultants have sufficient training in building and maintaining excellent customer relations. Barnaby Consulting Corp., a “boutique” firm, provides consulting services in the area of virtual management. Virtual management, brought about by the rise of the Internet, globalization, outsourcing, telecommuting, and virtual teams, is the management of widely dispersed groups and individuals, perhaps without ever meeting them face to face. Because of this, team leaders face challenges of coordinating work across different time zones and physical distance, of establishing effective working relationships in the absence of face-to-face communication, and of dealing with choices of appropriate technology and its use. In global virtual teams, the added dimension of cultural differences impacts a team’s functioning. Barnaby’s consultants’ role is to provide solutions to clients to address these multifaceted challenges. The challenge of identifying consultants with excellent communication skills is no news to Frazer. Because of young people’s reliance on technology as a primary means of communication, Frazer has noticed a decline in their skills at and comfort with communicating face to face. This lack can impede their ability to maintain the reputation of Barnaby in their interactions with clients and to build the long-lasting relationships upon which many organizations depend for future business.
