Write TWO full essays, two pages each. You can choose TWO of any of the following six. Not SIX essays, just choose two questions and write 2 pages on which ones you choose. Please confirm you follow me.

1. Discuss the founding of the European colonies in the New World. What events led to their founding and briefly discuss their early development? How did these colonies differ? How were they governed? Discuss how the English colonies differed from one another? Of all the colonies in the New World, which colony was the most successful?

2. Discuss the events leading up to the American Revolution. What actions did the British take to enrage the colonists? How did the colonists react to many of these acts? List some of the grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence. How do these grievances relate to British actions and discuss whether the British had lived up to the principles of sound government laid out in the Declaration. Should any grievances have been added or omitted?

3. Detail the course of the American Revolution. What were the strategies of the British and the Americans and what difficulties did each face? Were the colonists united in their goals for the Revolutionary War? How did the war end, and how did each side fare in the peace that followed?

4. George Washington, Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson are four important leaders of the Revolutionary Era. Who were these men and what was their impact on the course of the nation? How were they alike and how were they different? Who is the most admirable of these figures?

5. What caused the formation of political parties in the United States? Describe the formation of the two main political parties that arose during the administration of George Washington in the 1790s and explain the main issues dividing them. What were the basic philosophies of the parties and who were their leaders? What became of these factions?

6. Detail the Bill of Rights. Discuss the civil liberties listed in the first ten amendments to the constitution? Why were the amendments ratified? Should any amendments have been added or omitted? Is the Bill of Rights a strong enough protection of civil rights in the United States?
