Assumption analysis
Project instructions:
In constructing your essay, be sure to answer the following questions:
1. The Library of Congress call number system seeks to organize all known information. However, it does not give equal weight to all realms of human knowledge. With this in mind, what assumptions undergird this system of organization? What is relatively more important? What is relatively unimportant?
2. The College of the Canyons library, like most colleges and universities, uses the Library of Congress Call Number system to organize its collection. Ours is a relatively small library; space is at a premium. Given our limited shelf space, what have our librarians determined is important based on the relative shelf space? What assumptions have they made?
3. Why might the library structure its collection the way it has? What institutional factors?such as the courses we offer, the size of our departments, or our degree programs?might shape the collection?
Your thesis should focus on answering questions two and three. In answering these questions, you should provide a broad overview of the collection, but the bulk of your analysis should focus on a specific segment of the collection. This will allow you to form a more focused analysis. You might want to focus on the subject areas that you hope to major in.
