Annotated bibliography and video essay
Background
Television, radio, newspapers and the Internet are major sources of scientific information for the general public, yet the increase in availability of scientific information has not always increased people’s knowledge. As research in nutrition is a dynamic process, nutrition experts are frequently called upon to interpret the latest research findings. Recommendations made by nutrition experts are based on the best science available at the time, however, it can be complex to interpret research findings and provide recommendations that consider a complete dietary pattern for optimal health.
The following assignment will involve collecting and collating information on a current nutrition topic into an annotated bibliography and producing a short (3 minute) video featuring you as a nutrition expert interpreting this information for the lay public. Your job is to present the main message from the scientific literature on your nutrition topic to a lay audience and to place this information in the context of whole of diet.
Unfortunately the media reports on health bear a large part of the responsibility for the frustration the public feels toward nutrition scientists as they emphasize short, ‘newsworthy’ pieces, or even choose scientific studies for their ‘controversy’ because they are contrary to current recommendations. Because reports like this provide little background information about how the new results fit in with other evidence on the topic, the public often assume that the scientists previously got it wrong and are now backtracking. Confused readers may be less likely to comply with expert nutrition and health advice and the apparent ‘flip-flopping’ of the scientific community in providing nutrition recommendations can be frustrating for people who are unfamiliar with the scientific process. For this reason it is important that your message, as a nutrition expert, is clear and is placed in the context of a whole healthy diet, and with a strong understanding of the evidence base so that the viewers can be clear about the impact of the recent research findings for them and their health.
This will be assessed according to the rubric linked to this assignment. Please review the rubric for more details.
Learning objectives
• Identify and collate the relevant scientific literature on a current nutrition topic
• Summarise and critique the scientific literature on your current nutrition topic
• Synthesise the evidence base on your current nutrition topic to form public health nutrition recommendations
• Communicate recommendations on your current nutrition topic in a clear and concise manner suitable to specialist and non-specialist audiences
• Apply knowledge of dietary patterns for optimal health to set public health recommendations on your current nutrition topic in a whole of diet context
Your task
Step 1
Choose a current nutrition topic from the list distributed by the unit coordinator.
Step 2
Review the scientific literature on the health benefits and/or detriment of your current food or nutrition topic and prepare an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography provides a brief account of the available research on a given topic. It is a list of research sources that includes concise descriptions and evaluations of each source. You bibliography should contain at least 10, but no more than 20 scientific references. You need to consider carefully the texts that you select for your annotated bibliography and ensure that the essential or key texts on the topic are included. The citation for each reference should be according to Harvard-style of referencing – see the UWA library guide to Harvard style of referencing for more information. The annotation for each reference should contain the citation followed by a brief summary of content and a short analysis or evaluation of the reference of about 100-200 words per citation. Once complete upload your annotated bibliography file in the “attach file” section below. Here is an example annotated bibliography (Annotated bibliography example_2016.pdf

Review the scientific literature on the health benefits and/or detriment your current food or nutrition topic and prepare an annotated bibliography. (see LMS for examples)
Step 3
Use a cell phone or video camera to record a video interview approximately (3 minutes long) communicating recommendations of your current nutrition topic for the general public.
Load your video to YouTube making the video unlisted – that is share it only with those who have a link. Write or paste the link to the “text submission” area below.
