Document your relationship history following these guidelines:
List your three most notable relationship experiences (friendship, family, or romantic involvements). For each of these relationships, document the following:
Identify what you learned about yourself (i.e., what attracts you to other people, what you found to be the cost of the relationship, what you found to be the benefit of the relationship, etc.)
What did you expect from the other person in the relationship?
What communication rules were established? What were acceptable topics and forbidden topics?
How much did you reveal about yourself?
How much did the other person reveal?
What strategies did you use to resolve conflict?
Once you have documented your history, relate the information about your relationships to theories on interpersonal communication and relationships presented in the text (pp. 149-152).
