Assignment

You will choose
ONE from the following texts:
(1) Plato’s Republic Book VII (“Allegory of the Cave,” 514a-521e)
(2) Plato’s Republic Book II (“Myth of the Gyges Ring”)
(3) A specific passage or theme from the Apology
(4) A specific passage or theme from the Crito
(5) A specific passage or theme from the Meno
(6) A specific passage or theme from the Phaedo

Introduction should include the following:
(1) What is the paper’s task? (answer: the exegesis of your chosen passage)
(2) What is the topic of the passage? What is the author’s thesis in the passage?
(3) Provide a “roadmap” of how you will proceed in drawing out the meaning and significance of
the passage.
Example: “First, the paper will look at ______. Then it will explore ______. Lastly, it will
examine ______.”
*This is not the time to get into detail. Leave the details for the body of the paper.
Body of the paper:
The body of the paper follows the roadmap you laid out in the introduction. If your roadmap, for instance, has
three elements that it will examine, then be sure to have the body of the paper clearly demarcate these three
elements.
Conclusion:
The conclusion succinctly summarizes what your findings are and why they contribute to an understanding of the
overall point of the text.

A minimum of FOUR relevant quotations from your chosen passage is expected in the body of your paper.
When supporting your claims, base what you say on the text by quoting. This is a VERY IMPORTANT part of
the paper because these quotations are the basis for your interpretation of the text. DO NOT include quotes or
citations from sources other than your chosen passage. This paper is an attempt to interpret your chosen passage
on its own terms. Fewer than 4 quotations will get you no more than a C+ on the paper.
