Students are expected to make screening notes on a total of four films screened in class. Two notes must be written on films screened in the first half of the course, two notes must be written on films screened in the second half of the course. The first two Screening Notes are due on July 19. The second two Screening Notes are due on August 9.
Screening Notes must contain two elements: 1/ they can include a short synopsis of the film, examine the emotional impact of the film, the significance of a particular sequence or shot, the meaning of a specific character or performance or the dynamics of the narrative, analyze the director’s unique approach to cinematic or pictorial time and space, or analyze the key themes and ideas of the film; and 2/ they must include a reference to the key ideas in one of the assigned readings associated with the film. These notes may be as expressive and creative as you like, but they must be clear, comprehensible and grammatically sound. The Screening Notes for each film should be 500 words (two typewritten double-spaced pages).
