Instructions: Answer the question below in essay format. Your short paper should be 3 pages long (no more than ½ page shorter OR longer).

-It should be typed, double-spaced, with 12 pt Times New Roman font and 1-inch page margins. This is standard formatting for college papers (and yes, I can tell when you use larger font and margins).

-It should use correct grammar and spelling.

-It should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. It should have a thesis statement at the end of the introduction.

-You should use quotations from A Different Mirror, but remember to use quotation marks and citation. You do not need to do outside research. For this class, you can use a basic form of citation, (Author, page number), i.e. (Takaki, 10).

-But you should use quotations sparingly, i.e not too much. The paper should be mostly your words, with several key quotations used to provide essential evidence.

-No single quotation should be longer than 3 lines.

-Your paper should have an original title that gives me an idea of the main theme of your paper. The title should not simply be “Paper.”

Question: What is the argument of Ronald Takaki’s A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America? How does make that argument? What was his larger goal in writing the book? In addition to Takaki’s book, you must also use ONE primary source from Canvas in your paper.

***HINT: Start by looking back at the first and last chapters, especially at what he says about the “Master Narrative” of American history. Authors always lay out their arguments in the first chapter and then revisit them in the last (i.e. the introduction and conclusion)
