Assessment 6 – Water Use and Availability, Water Treatment, and Water Treatment Calculations

Assessment 6 – Water Use and Availability, Water Treatment, and Water Treatment Calculations

1. List five key attributes that support the use of chlorine for disinfection of water.

2. Between the water supply and when water is sent to storage and distribution, what are the six steps in conventional water treatment model?

3. You have been selected to serve as the water quality expert on a team of scientists supporting the restoration of a small village in a mountainous area of Chile, which has recently been devastated by an earthquake. The village sits at the base of a small watershed and a single stream flows through the hilly agricultural areas and then flows adjacent to the village. Downstream from the village the untreated water is pumped from the stream directly into the homes of the inhabitants. The surface water is influenced by agricultural runoff from crops and surface water runoff from a dairy farm prior to being pumped from the stream. Identify several specific stream pollutants of interest and present a plan for mitigating the threat to drinking water quality; describe specific treatment techniques and source mitigation.
