Art History

Order DescriptionI have listed 20 terms associated with the art and architecture of the time periods covered in this class. You should choose 10 of these terms, define them, and give an example of how they are used in a modern (after 1500 CE) context IN HOUSTON. This means that you’ll have to look around your environment and possibly go to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org), the Menil Collection (www.menil.org), or other fine art institutions. When you locate a building or piece of art that utilizes one of the characteristics below, you must explain where it is, explain how the art or architectural element was used in the past and how it is used in the modern object you have chosen, and discuss why you think the artist or architect chose to use it.
If you use ANY outside sources, you must cite them within your paper – this includes websites, pamphlets, museum placards or docent lectures, in addition to books and journals. If you find several of these elements within one building or within one painting or sculpture, you should still explain fully why each was used.
You can be as creative as you’d like with the format, however, an INTRODUCTION and CONCLUSION are required. There is not a page requirement or word count for this, but you must discuss each of the 10 terms and objects you choose thoroughly and cover all of the issues described in the assignment.

2. Post and Lintel Construction
3. Hieratic Scale
