1. Identify and describe the reading, its central claim or argument, methods used by the author, and evidence presented.

2. Identify and describe the thesis, central claim, or main idea of the reading.

3. Identify and describe the supporting argument and/or evidence presented by the author.

4. Identify and describe the methods employed by the author(s).
Analyze the argument made by the author.
Address any assumptions or implications present in the reading.

5. Identify the author(s)’ intent, attitude, tone, and/or bias

The content should relate to the course content, i.e. the lec
tures/presentations as well as the other class readings in the book.

Students are encouraged to utilize specific examples and work(s) of art as evidence to support and apply their ideas.

While students need to address the ideas/concepts presented in the reading the assignment is not a summary. Rather, the assignment is response that should analyze, contextualize, relate, and reveal what and how the reading(s) reveal about the art historical, historical, and cultural context.

Requirements:

Citation style: The paper must be written in correct Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) formatting as stipulated in the Liberal Arts Writing Guide (available on the class website). Specific works of art that are referenced within the paper need to be included with appropriate CMS image labels, credit lines, and in-text figure references. Additionally, ideas/concepts and specific quotes must include citations. Note: this includes not only the specific assigned readings but also ideas/concepts and specific quotes that originate in the assigned textbook, lectures/presentations, and/or other outside resources.
Essay style: paper must be organized and include an introduction, thesis statement, supporting arguments and a conclusion and written in complete Standard English sentences.
Length: approximately 1 to 3 pages of text.
