Art

assignment #1 (on the first page)

In this essay, we will focus our efforts on the concept of ‘interpretation’ and understanding the meaning of art practices to: communities, institutions or organizations (nonprofits, for-profits, governmental), and/or audiences. I will provide examples in class during the Tuesday session of the week this is due.

We will practice using our lexicon terms and course concepts to ‘make sense’ of art worlds/practices in relationship to the social, cultural, political, and/or economic contexts within which they happen. Toward this end, we should consider and address “meaning” in relationship to:

– values

– relevance

– outcomes/benefits

You will identify an art or creative practice and a specific context within which it occurs (this may be the beginning of your art world assignment!); draw on at least 3 lexicon terms to discuss your understanding of this practice within the context; draw on at least 1 course reading in order to anchor your understanding.

Mechanics of assignment:

* draw on 3 lexicon terms (put them in bold or italic)

* use at least 1 course reading/concept…

assignment #2 (on the second page)

1) What do We Mean When We Talk About Art?

2) What does the author mean when she states, “A species-centered view considers the arts as verbs (or verbal nouns) – an activity that people do. It is hard to think of art this way in part because English and other European Languages don’t have a verb “to artify.” Trying to determine what such an activity might mean will also help us to understand and appreciate how widespread and important the arts are to us, both as individuals and as a species.”

3) Choose 2 section headings from the below and address the concepts and ideas behind what the author is stating. Share how you personally respond to these concepts.

– Arts Origins

– Arts Infinitum

– The Arts and Human Needs

– Play and Entertainment

– Belonging

– Social and Individual Identity

– Resolution of Conflict

– Physical Use of Hands and Body

– Using the Whole Mind

– Coping and Catharsis

– Meaning

– Transcendence

– The Arts’ Future
