Architecture History

Choose a building by an architect featured in chapters 1-2 of Colquhoun’s Modern Architecture , and imagine that you are briefing someone to lead a study group around the building. In your paper, draw attention to the features of your chosen building’s design, program, and history that make it an innovative example of modern architecture.

If you don’t have a copy of the book, I can scan the chapter for you.

Chapter 1: Art Nouveau 1890-1910 (You cannot choose Guimard and Gaudi)
Chapter 2: Organicism versus Classicism: Chicago 1890-1910 (You cannot choose Sullivan and Wright)

Requirements:
•    1500-1700 words,1.5 spacing, MS Word-readable, plus illustrations and bibliography).
•    This paper is testing i) research skills and ii) writing / communication skills, including factual accuracy, spelling, grammar, and argumentation.
•    Reference your paper: cite where your information has come from using in-text references or endnotes. Use proper footnote form.
•    Include captions saying what the illustrations are of—name of the architect and/ or client (if known), the name of the building, its date, with one sentence explaining how each illustration supports your findings.
•    For a high grade, supplement your reading from the textbook and class notes with your own additional research and reading. Access sources in library and through online databases. Credit increases for sources in this order: web, books, articles. Direct observation of a building and the reading of its plans (through reproductions or, ideally, through a visit) will also be credited. List your readings in a bibliography. Annotate the bibliography with a one or two sentence description of why each source matters (imagine guiding your reader in case they need to do some research of their own). The more research you do, and the better you are able to incorporate it into your paper, the higher your grade is likely to be.
•    Use the guidance notes “Architectural Analysis” .  See the guide to reading plans. And see the chapter by Barnet, “A Short Guide to Writing about Art” . (See the Upload additional materials)
