Aims:
• To develop professional competence in a range of management and HRM skills which underpin successful management practice and leadership;

• To allow students to critically appreciate how HRM theory and research can be applied to and enhance their own practice as HRM professionals;

• To provide the opportunity for students to develop greater self-awareness and skills through critical self-reflection.

Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Understand theories and practice of managing themselves and others, using personality profiles;

• Critically evaluate and apply theories of team working, leadership and interpersonal communication in order to manage and lead others more effectively;

• Critically reflect upon and develop skills in decision-making, problem-solving, team-working and business communications;

• Show a critical awareness of the underpinning theoretical frameworks and principles of interviewing, training and negotiations and applying these principles in practice;

• Understand and interpret HRM-related financial information and demonstrate proficiency in using this information for developing a HR business case

Interpersonal Skills Workshop
This workshop takes place early in the module and aims to develop students’ skills in areas of:
1. Team working
2. Leadership
3. Interpersonal communication
4. Decision-making and problem-solving

Scheduling: These skills will be developed during a 2-day off-site workshop

Leadership and team working also form part of the Managing People in Organisations (MPiO) module which takes place during the Autumn Term, where some of the underpinning theoretical concepts will be introduced.
Preparation: As preparation for the workshop students should read Chapter 2 of Skilled Interpersonal Communication by Owen Hargie and David Dickson, 2004, which is available as an electronic book via the library catalogue. Students should also read the article by Hogan and Warrenfeltz (2003), Educating the Modern Manager, which is available on the Blackboard site.
Assessment: Skills developed during the two day workshop will be assessed by means of a structured reflective log. Questions relating to this part of the module will be found in Part 1 of the log template (see Appendix 1). Students are advised to complete this part of the log as soon as possible after attending both the workshop and related taught sessions on the MPiO module.
