Week 4 Written Assignment – Application of a Nursing Model of Culturally Competent Care
Overview

The purpose of examining a cultural situation or encounter and applying a model is to broaden the student’s horizons of the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in a patient care or community setting. Cultural competence is an essential component of nursing care. In a society of globalization, our patient population is comprised of individuals with different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. To value this range of diversity, nurses should be able to identify and respect an individual’s customs, thoughts, behaviors, communication styles, values, and traditions

Details: This assignment will allow the student to select and apply a model of Cultural Competence to a health care issue or setting. Students will select a cultural encounter or situation in the health care setting. The encounter can be related to health care disparities for the culture, communication, differences in health beliefs, or lack of education or awareness of the culture.

In a 6-8 page paper (not including the tile and reference pages), students will provide a description of the practice setting and the cultural encounter or situation. Next, outline how cultural competence is presented and assessed in the organization. Students will then identify a model of Cultural Competence from the list below. Describe the model and how it fits with the cultural issue and the organization. Identify a plan to implement the model into the practice setting. Finally, the student will outline how the model will be evaluated for its effectiveness in addressing the issue and fitting within the organizational culture and a plan to address continued cultural competence and education within the organization.
