Application Essay

In this application essay you apply critical concepts and topics covered in Culture and Technology chapters to a technology of your choosing. Drawing on concepts discussed in chapters 10, 11, and 12such as causality, agency, articulation and assemblageyou analyze and critique the technology. Pick one technology from Glasses(such as contact lenses), Clothes, Washer, Car, and Shower.

Your essay should describe the material, cultural, and affect dimensions of the technology in detail. For example, does culture adapt to technologies, or do technologies adapt to culture? Or both? How does the technology exert agency or you or people in general? What representations, practices, experiences, affects, and materials articulate together form the assemblage of the technology? How does it function as form of power? What is prescribed and delegated in the connections?

You must write 1,000 word essay on your chosen technology. Correctly cited using MLA, grammatically correct, double spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 point New.

2. Strong Thesis Statement
    -Small claims, not big ones (short space means small claims)
    -Example: Although corrective lenses make the lives of wearers easier, their necessity is not always convenient, and it is this necessity that takes control away from the user and places it on the technology itself.

4. Use information and sources to make your point.
    -Do not rely on what you think you already know.
5. Do not argue why X Tech is an example of Y Concept: Use them to challenge your own assumptions:
    -Instead of Glasses are an example of technological determinism, progress, or convenience
    -Progress narrative – For whom? For what?
    -What is the claim to moral/material betterment
    -Convenience – in exchange for what?
    -Control – dependence and trust?
