Spiritual Caregiving DR – Chapter 9 & 10
This week, we discussed the importance of filling your cup as an HP, so that you are better equipped to empathetically serve others. For this DR, carefully do the following:
Either in nature or in a quiet and secluded place that is technology-free, spend an hour reflecting on your self-transcendent purpose in life, and consider how your work aspirations are connected to your perceived purpose in life. Allow scripture from your tradition or a spiritually inspirational poem to guide you into your period of reflection. Perhaps also consider spiritual practices such as prayer/meditation and try them during this hour of spiritual reflection.
After you’ve spent at least 30 minutes in quiet reflection, begin to consider and answer ALL of the following spiritual inventory questions, which will count as your DR for the week:
(1) What scripture/poem did you find to guide your reflection? What was the central message of your reading?
(2) Was it hard for you to focus your mind and keep this time technology-free? How could improving at being able to focus and build in time like this become potentially beneficial to your overall well-being?
(3) What do you currently perceive your purpose in life entailing, and how does your aspiration to be a healthcare practitioner fit into your perceived purpose in life?
(4) Is your life in balance? Did this time of reflection reveal any ways that you could establish more of a healthy rhythm to guide you throughout the many demands of your life?
(5) How do you want to be remembered? In other words, what do you hope that people will say about you one day, hopefully long from now, at your funeral? What is one thing you can stop doing and one thing you can start doing so that you will be better remembered the way that you would like to be remembered?
