Discussion 11.1 (Provide a follow up response to the noted below classmates discussion)

1. Share with classmates an interesting case or educational experience from the practicum setting which is noted right below. Provide a follow up discussion/response to this classmates discussion that was posted. This is for a Nurse Practitioner Rotation

According to Aston (2018), when educating nurses, “There is huge potential to grow and develop all members of the nursing team so that they reach their full potential if the right education and support are in place” (p. 313).  I have learned so much from my experience with Dr. Yelamanchi. She has helped me figure out my ICD codes and what codes need to be listed first for insurance reasons and billing to Medicare (ICD 10 Codes, n.d.).  A typical day we see around 40 some patients with sick visits in between.  I have gained confidence in my assessment skills and document on all the patients’ assessment, ICD codes, and review of symptoms.  As a collaboration, the diagnosis and treatment are done together before dictation.

The exciting thing in my practicum that I’m going to discuss is concerning the patient came in for a sick visit because of feeling fatigued and tired.  I assessed the patient and found out that the patient has had dark stools and blood on toilet paper.  Through the review of symptoms, Dr. Yelamanchi called the Gi doctor we refer too, and he has seen the patient immediately for rectal bleeding.  I felt with my assessment skills and review of symptoms, and we caught an early issue of Gi bleed or rectal bleeding.

I have enjoyed my time with my preceptor, and I look forward to my clinical days to learn more and to feel more confident in the role of a provider.  I do believe having a good preceptor helps to establish goals and achieve success in your semester as a nurse practitioner student.  She has helped me become more comfortable with my assessment skills and treatment plan.  Good luck to everyone!
