Animation Analysis

Write an analysis paper about a key Warner Bros animator.

Should be at least 600 words.

1.Choose 1 of these 3 animators/directors form Warner Bros: Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, or Chuck Jones. Choose 3 key thesis points such as: sense of humor, innovative animation techniques, irreverent subject matter, use of new characters, work with sound, breaking the rules of filmmaking, etc.

2.Pick 3 of their short films and cite specific examples to support your 3 key thesis arguments.

3.You need to focus on an overall structural theme You may also focus on the animation techniques; explain how their films developed innovative styles and narrative content compared to the short films from Disney, Fleischer, Universal etc. These shorts were very popular; you may focus on the cultural/social climate & explain why these animators connected with the audience – especially with American audiences at that time.

4•You may focus only on the types of characters they used; explain how these characters connected with the audience. Cite very specific examples. You may also focus on the business side and explain how these new kind of cartoons functioned within the overall business plan of Warner Brothers. For example, begin with the studio’s innovations in sound films – the war effort – into television.

5.Do not spend time on explaining the plots of their films. Get right to the point, then right to specific examples. There is no need for an introduction paragraph in the paper. Jump right into the discussion. This is NOT a movie review. It is an ANIMATION analysis. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_basic_principles_of_animation)

6.Please do not get too wordy or repetitive. Use action verbs and specific adjectives that support your point. For example, this is a good example:

“…Cab Calloway, turning him into a ghostly walrus-like figure. Calloway’s movements were exaggerated, slow, and contorted. The resulting animated walrus is very unearthly and creepy, and less silly, as would have been in the case with the more common “rubber hose” style…”

7..Avoid generalizations. For example: “Tex Avery was a great animator who created a variety of shorts that people enjoyed and are still enjoyed today because of the way he used new techniques …” This is too general and vague, and makes too many points at the same time. I suggest using direct quotes form the textbook and reserves – it will give you a strong structural base.

8.Refer to the PowerPoint slides attached and use the book (The World History of Animation, By: Stephen Cavalier) (Pages 118-152) . Use the specific terms (some are underlined). Most films are available online on Youtube.

9) Do not hesitate to ask me anything anytime. And please give enough time in-case of revision.

10) If you do not have a cope of the book. I can send you pics of the required pages. DO NOT ASK ME A DAY BEFORE DEADLINE!
