1) Summarize the events of “The Wife’s Story” by Ursula K. Le Guin–what is the twist at the end of the story? What are we meant to get from the story?
2) Summarize briefly each author’s approach to animal rights discussed in the article “On the Side of Animals.” Which author’s perspective (if any–you are free to disagree with them all) do you like most? What is your current view of non-human animals? Do you think animals should have any rights/protections under the law? If so, which animals and why? How do you interact with nonhuman animals in your everyday life? How might animal rights be related to women’s rights and children’s rights (many people find this way of thinking offensive and do not like comparing animal oppression to human forms of oppression–if you feel this way, just tell me why)? What is your definition of “species”? Do you believe humans are better, more special, smarter, more worthy of moral consideration than all other animals? If so, why/how? What are your views regarding animal cruelty, owning pets, zoos, dog/chicken fighting, breeding animals, horse riding, dog racing, animal research, eating animals…? Feel free to relate your beliefs to any religious, cultural, or health views you may have.
