Writing Your Analytical Paper
In your analytical paper, you should make an argument based on one or more of the course readings. A common student mistake, however, is to summarize the readings in question rather than to make argument about them. I will grade your paper for clarity and organization, but I place particular weight on the presence of a well-developed argument with good supporting evidence.
Often, students find that the best way to develop a thesis that makes a sustainable argument is to compare two readings. However, if you choose this option, be sure that your paper does more than just point out the differences between the readings. You can start by focusing on these differences, but you should then proceed to explain the significance of them in their historical context. Otherwise you will simply be summarizing two readings rather than one. In other words, don’t just tell me how the readings are different; tell me why they are different, and why it matters.
One key to developing a strong thesis is to read critically and closely. For a primary source in particular, think about who created it, when, and for what purpose. Are there tensions inherent in the source or contradictions in its argument? Does the creator seem to have a particular agenda or an obvious political bias? Is he or she trying to hide that bias? Does he or she raise a particular point numerous times? And why does it matter? In answering these kinds of questions, you will be interpreting historical evidence in a way that enables you to make an argument.
Once you come up with what you think is a good thesis, test it. Does it answer a question about the significance of the source or sources, and does it tell the reader something he/she would not know simply from reading the source? In other words, your thesis should not simply be a description of the source or sources, but your interpretation of their significance.
This paper will analyze three readings. < The Three Principle of People> written by Sun Yat San; the story of A Q written by Lu Xun and Fmaily written by Ba Jin. Three readings were written during the Chinese revolution in 1911. In the late 19th century, Chinese governed under Qing Dynasty faced a problem both internal and external. Government of Qing Dynasty brought chaos to Chinese economy and politic. Therefore, Sun Yat sen lighten his soul fire to formed revolutionary party to overthrow the Manchu government. The aim of the revolution is to estabilish a democratic country in china. Three readings were wrote to exposed the problem existing in china in that period of time. However, Three principle is an article. The story of A Q and Fmaily are novels. While all three writing commonly expressed that revolution constructed to democratic republic society from feudal imperial society, but the unenlightened ideology of Chinese people have not changed.
First and foremost, the three principle of people written by Sun Yan Sen describe the ideology of Chinese people before the revolution that he encouraged Chinese people have to change their unenlightened ideology. When Sun Yan Sen compares the ideology of foreigner people towards European revolution and US revolution are fight for liberty and independent. He said china is follow their also should filght for liberty. “ this is nothing but say what other says, they have not applied their minds to the study of democracy or liberty and have no real insight into their meaning” the method of learn from others is a positive strategy, but it is unsuitable when applying on the Chinese people. The opium is a good example, opium is a new product from west to China. Qing dynasty accept the opium flowing in china because of the promotion strategy works by the british. Qing government did not apply their mind to look insight at Opium to doing research to know if opium was a good product for people. If they do so, the opium is avoidable. One of the reason foreigner thought china is loosen sand from the three principle of people is the example on opium. He advocate Chinese ideology to fight are min zhu, min quan and min- sheng on their own.
The story of A Q is a novel written by Chinese famous writer Lu Xun after the 1911 revolution. He saw the revolution did not change the unenlightened ideology of Chinese people. A Q is the main character in this novel.
