Salt Lake City Public Library is an architectural marvel. After the relocation from its old
location, Moshe Safdie and Associates has performed a miracle. The structure itself is 34,370 m3
made up of concrete along with 16385.1 m2 of glass. Glass allows easy exchange of fresh
sunlight and also allows the library to preserve energy and stay green. Around the library, there
is ample parking space and trax stop is right in front of the library building. This allows people to
commute easily to the library, without the need to use their car, hence saying precious fossil
fuels. The library’s total area is 22,000m2 and the building itself is five-story tall. The shape of
the building is wedge-shaped accounting to the slightly triangular plot the library was built on.
Library not only boosts 500,000 books, but also has several magazine subscriptions along with
internet connection. Around the library, there is a open space, which was left out to create a
public park. This allows people to relax and enjoy their reading time. There is also a lime stone
paved at library square, which is from Israel. After entering the library, the “Urban Room”,
extends all five floors and ends with a skylight, which is almost 1,900 m2. This skylight allows
library to use day light and preserve energy during day. There are also several shops at this foyer,
allowing users to buy merchandise. The roof of the library is actually a garden. Several trees,
grasses, flowering bulbs are planted across the rooftop giving the library earthy design. When
you enter the library, it emits aura of mother earth and gently soothes users. The best feature of
library is that it depends mostly on natural lighting, which reduces the use of electricity. Since
the structure has a huge five story glass wall, most of the sunlight comes from there and lights up
the whole library.
