This short paper is a critical analysis of a news article that deals with religion. Several articles will be
posted on eClass, and you will choose one to analyze. This is not a research paper per se, but in your
paper you should incorporate what you have learned from the class lectures and readings. The paper
should contain: (1) a general introduction and brief summary of the article; (2) brief identification of
key religious concepts that the article highlights or comments upon; and (3) analysis of the article. The
bulk of the paper should consist of analysis. In your analysis, you should ask questions like: What does

the article assume about religion? What key issues related to religion does it bracket or ignore? How
does its representation of religion compare to what your textbook has to say and what we’ve covered in
class thus far? Please note: these are the types of questions that should guide your analysis, but these
are just suggestions—an excellent (“A”) paper will demonstrate to me that you’ve done some critical,
creative thinking on your own
