Analysing the sydney airport case

Assessment Item 1: Analysing the Sydney Airport Case

Rationale

This task requires you to analyse and explain why you think successive governments have found it so difficult to make a decision on a site for a second airport in Sydney. It is an exercise designed to encourage you to think as broadly as you can about:

the issues and interests at stake in this matter

the key actors and stakeholders involved; and

the kinds of information and knowledge that has been commissioned and used to inform consideration of this important policy problem.

There are no right or wrong answers. I am interested in what you think, drawing on the information you have gained from the video news reports that you have watched. No further reading or research is required. For the purposes of this exercise, the videos are sufficient.

Your task:
Prepare a short report (of no more than 500 words in length) which presents your analysis of why governments of all political persuasions at Commonwealth and State levels, have found it so difficult to determine a site for the second Sydney airport.

In preparing to write your report, you should consider:

the issues and interests at stake in determining a site for the second Sydney airport;

the key actors and stakeholders involved;

the kinds of information and knowledge that has been commissioned and used to inform consideration of this important policy problem; and
in what ways this might imapct on or influence governments’ consideration of the issues.

Your report must contain an Introduction and Conclusion and it should present a clear argument, supported by evidence and examples from the news reports you have watched. Although it is only a short report, using a limited number of sources, it is important to observe proper Referencing style. Thus your report should have a Reference List and, if you are quoting or citing evidence from one of the news reports, you should reference this appropriately in the report text.
