The American Industrial Revolution and the Market Revolution that accompanied it changed the way that pre-Civil War (Antebellum) Americans saw themselves as consumers and as patriots. Labor took on new meaning(s). The factory became central to American life. The railway system changed the very cultural fabric of the nation. In other words, life was no longer the same.
