We will begin talking about World War I next week after your test. It is now generally agreed that World War I was one of the turning points in Western Civilization, certainly of the 20th century. There are three things posted for you: one is a 1965 documentary marking the 50th annivesary of the war, called The Guns of August, based on a book by the same name. The second thing is a short speech by Woodrow Wilson urging Americans to remain neutral in the war; and finally, there is Wilson’s declaration of War in April 1917. I want you to watch/read all of them, and then using them, along with the powerpoint Teddy and Progressives that I have already posted, I want you to write me a minimum three page paper, addressing the following questions: Did the growth of American government during the Progressive help or hinder the United States in World War I, and assess Woodrow Wilson as a war president. These papers are getting a little bit harder as we go along. Don’t worry, I noticed.
