The Essay structure include:

Introduction
3 body paragraph
conclusion

So, the introduction include:
*hook
*link
*situation now
*difference of opinion
*thesis and short paragraph topics

Introductions are very important. The introduction gives the reader their first impression of the text. The first impression that you want to give the reader is of a

high-quality argumentative text written in a professional academic style. A simple introduction to an argumentative essay has a number of parts:

1. provides a hook to interest the reader (e.g. a dramatic statistic)
2. links the hook to the rest of the introduction by commenting on it
3. explains what the situation is now
4. states that there is a difference of opinion
5. clearly states the writer’s main idea (thesis statement)*and gives a summary of the paragraphs.

Model Introduction:
In 2010 there were over 550,000 women in armies worldwide (Luddy & Reynolds 2011, p.2).
(hook)
However, not all countries which allow women in the army also allow them to fight on the frontline.
(link)
Both the US and UK military have considered this question and both rejected allowing women onto the frontline (Steihm et al. 2008). Currently, Australia does permit

women to fight in combat roles (Clavell 2011, p.29).
(situation now)
Some people believe that if the Australian Army needs to increase, then allowing women into the frontline is the only way to attract more soldiers.
(difference of opinion)
However, this essay will argue that women should not go into battle for several reasons: they are not strong enough for combat, many are affected by their

responsibilities as mothers, and women are not needed to make up the numbers in the army.
(thesis and paragraph topics)

3 body paragraph ( argumentative 1 reason each body)

body paragraph 2/ TV advertising leads adversely psychological effects for children and parents.

According to Anstey and Bull (2004, p. 97) ‘the identification and analysis of values in texts can be difficult. Sometimes they are overt: sometimes they are hidden’.
• Author(s) (year, page) states/ argues/ claims/ suggests that ‘direct quote’.
Anstey and Bull (2004, p.97) state that ‘the identification and analysis of values in texts can be difficult. Sometimes they are overt: sometimes they are hidden’.
• As author(s) (year, page) + states/ argues /claims/ suggests/ points out ‘direct quote’.

Writing Conclusions
Conclusions are just as important as introductions. The conclusion finishes the essay and tries to close the issue. The aim is to convince the reader that the essay

has covered all the most important arguments and that the writer’s opinion is the best position on the issue. New ideas should not be presented in the conclusion.
There are three parts to a simple conclusion to an argumentative essay:
1. restate the thesis
2. a summary of the arguments in the main body
3. thought for the future*: a warning of the consequences of not following your opinion and/or a statement of how the community will benefit from following your

opinion.
Exercise
Put the following sentences in the correct order to make a conclusion from an argumentative essay which argues that the government should spend more money on childcare

places for parents who study or work.
a. If we do not meet our obligations in this area, we will be sacrificing our future well-being in order to satisfy old-fashioned ideas of family life, and to achieve

short-term financial savings.
b. In conclusion, it is essential that we support the nation’s parents and children by funding more childcare places.
c. The entire community will benefit economically, socially and culturally.
