1. Identify key events that impact adolescents’ feelings, cognitions, and behaviors.
All adolescents develop and cope with stressors and traumatic events differently. There is a rising trend in adolescents to use cutting and other self-mutilation techniques to help them cope with traumatic events. For them it’s how they stop the internal voices of self doubt.
2. Compare and contrast biological, cognitive, psychological, social, and cultural domains of development for adolescence.
The biological domain dictates that youth learn to cope with stressors in a healthy manner that preserves life and physical well being. But, what happens when their psychological development doesn’t factor in the preservation of live and physical well being, the voices of self doubt get stuck on a loop and you just want them to stop… Friends have told you that cutting helps them find peace and the journey to self-mutilation begins.
3. Apply psychological theories of development.
Theories of development such as gender identity, peer and social groups, self-esteem, self-identity and self-image all play a role in how youth develop.
4. Describe research methods used in the study of adolescence.
Analysis of peer reviews was the primary source for this project.
5. Critique current topics in adolescence and relate them to theories of development.
This study showed me there simply isn’t enough academic research on this behavior. Professionals are still trying to find the etiology of the behavior. What is knows is that in most cases self-mutilation is caused from adolescents being exposed to a traumatic experience and the act of self-harm is simply a coping mechanism for them.
6. Write clearly and concisely using APA format.
Had to brush up on this format as I hadn’t used it in over a decade. Thank you for providing links to resources that helped with that process.”
