Admission Essay

Life is characterized of taking risks in everything that we undertake. The essence of our instincts is risks. Despite the challenges we meet, when we take these them we learn to adopt new ways and methods of tackling them in order to succeed. Although life is characterized of risks that are challenging, it is proven that, without taking risks, we cannot reach the point we aspire to. It is the attitude within us that keeps on igniting and rejuvenating our psyche to venture again and again into greater risks. By doing this, we improve our lives, and the well-being of our people.

I come from a life background that has involved taking risks to get to where I am currently. I have passed through experiences that have taught me that, pressing on despite the circumstances or the challenges, is the best way to handle life. For example, going through college life to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in accounting has not been a simple task. I have learnt that the right attitude and the interest for professionalism is the best approach to go about in the path of professional development.

I am for now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting, which I am expecting to complete by March of this year (2014). I have ambition to join the graduate school immediately, to further my career. My short term goal in the profession is to become a reputable auditor, and practice with decorum and ethics to preserve and promote the reputation of my faculty. I also have a long term goal in this profession; which is to become an executive officer of a reputable organization in the future. Pursuing post-graduate studies will provide me with a better opportunity even for promotion in my current job, incase my short term goal does not come to reality.

I am currently working in an accounting firm. I work on tax returns, book keeping and I also do auditing. My job objective is well supported by my past work and education. Having acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting, I have been equipped with a strong base for professional development in auditing. My previous work has been involving calculations. For example, from the year 2011 to the present, I have worked with students as a private mathematics tutor, and helped them improve their scores by an average of 20%. I am also working as a grader in the mathematics department. My work in the department involves organizing homework in statistics and calculus classes for a student population of more than 120. In addition, from June to September 2012, I worked as an auditing intern and gained a wealth of experience in auditing. For example, I was involved in preparing business activity tax returns for 30 local companies. I demonstrated strength in completing such a task within two weeks with very professional work ethics. To strengthen my professional base, I am involved in volunteer activities as a Tax Income Assistant, and I hold a certificate of public services from IRS. I also have skills in Microsoft word, Excel, Power Point, Access, La Tex, Eview and Ten Key Calculator.

Your school has been known to produce professionals who have practically demonstrated expertise, excellence and ethics. I have confidence that by admitting me to your school, I will add to this group ambition and energy. I promise that by choosing me, you have the right choice.

Admission Essay

Order DescriptionPlease improve the flow of the essay and make sure that every argument and situation are mentioned thoroughly. I would also like for the essay to be arranged to the best of the needs.

The question is:
“Critical thinking is a central goal of Jesuit education, and at LMU you’ll be asked to think critically and intensively in every class. Dr. King suggests that critical thinking results in our ability to inform intelligence with character, and strengthen character with intelligence. Please talk about a situation that demanded critical thinking from you, and how your choices or decisions integrated intelligence and character.”

Going to an international school back in Indonesia, I can safely say that I appreciate and understand other people’s nationality and culture. Through my appreciation towards other culture, I always seek for an opportunity to join any outside school and inside school activities whenever I can. During my senior year, an opportunity came to me when I was offered to become an English tutor in the English as a Second Language division at my friend’s tutoring center. When I accepted this position I constantly thought that learning a language would be harder than teaching it, but as time progressed, being an English tutor proved me wrong. Being a tutor helped to assess crucial skills including patient, determination, and critical. I learn that a good tutor does not only help a student in overcoming a problem, but a good tutor must also realize and understand that every student might learn in different ways.
During my tutoring time, I remembered that my supervisor would often remind me that I was not a “proofreading machine,” and it was my duty to motivate my tutees to not only study for getting higher grades, but also to be eager learners. As an ESL tutor, the main things I concentrated on were the grammar, contents, and the structure of the paper. Tutoring my tutees, however, shaped me to be more patient as it was a vital tool for teaching them. I had encountered many people with different characteristics, and everyday at that time, I always found a way to handle those people. Some students wanted to listen to my advice, and some did not satisfy with my advice and would keep on arguing. Nevertheless, I always determined to teach and give the best information for these students.
A young girl approached me for a proofread, and I told her I could not just proofread her paper. She then stared her paper, and her teardrops trembled down her face. In spite of having a lot of tutees, I never encountered this kind of situation, and I did not know what to do. She kept on crying, and all I just did was to console her slowly. She explained to me she just got into an international school, and writing a paper in English language was her biggest fearsince she never did before. Negative feedbacks from her teacher became her demotivation and led to fear. When she told me she was so busy with school and involved with many different extracurricular activities and volunteering commitments, I was briefly overwhelmed myself. Besides, she said that her parents pushed her to do everything and ace them. I could see her determination for success, despite her being over-pressured. Facing this kind of situation, I could see her struggle to have a firsthand experience of learning the English language from a non-native tongue.
Then, my critical thinking came to a huge part of my decision, and I decided to try my best to help her. Despite the fact that I had much schoolwork to do, I managed my time efficiently and committed to myself. I just believed in myself that I could help her, and it was my responsibility to help her in any possible way to make sure that she did not give up. Especially, I needed to make sure she kept on trying to maintain her determination to learn. Immediately, I asked her to give me her weekly schedule, and other kinds of English work she had done in class.
Upon receiving the files on the next day, I looked and analyzed each of them. I was amazed how organized she was before compiling her research into a whole paper. She had the outline papers, research printed, and I knew right a way where she had her problem at; she just had a problem in word choice and MLA formatting style in her essays. Looking through at her weekly schedule, I tried to find gap hours for her to study. The next time she returned, I prepared a week study plan for her focusing on vocabulary and another week to focus on MLA formatting styles. I repetitively reminded her to not pressure herself in one day. It was more important to study step by step and make sure she understood each of the components. Before leaving, she put a sincere smile on her face and told me she would do her best to be independent and to be better in her English class. As several weeks passed, she came back to me and showed me her improvement in her next paper. She looked so happy on her teacher’s positive feedbacks. As an appreciation, she thanked me by unexpectedly giving me a box of cookies. Through this experience, I am so grateful that I once had the opportunity to help other students who also want to achieve success, and I am blessed this experience has enhanced my skills and capabilities.
