A Taile of Two Cities: Lusaka, Zambia and Stockholm Sweden

With half of the world?s population now living in cities, urban dwellers are now confronting distinct and complex realities that create both opportunities and misfortunes. In studying the growing diversity of global cities, we begin to move away from a sole model of urbanization, and instead, embrace the intricacies of these global nodes. The purpose of the ?Tale of Two Cities? project is to enhance students? research and critical thinking skills by comparatively analyzing two different global cities. Students will be asked to select ONE particular geographical dimension (i.e. environmental degradation, inward migration, spatial economic inequalities, geopolitics, resource distribution, infrastructural disparities, or cultural diversity) to compare two global cities from distinct regions (i.e. Europe, South-East Asia, South America) outside of North America.
The ?Tale of Two Cities? project will be separated into two assignments: (1) (ALREADY DONE BY ME] the preliminary Media Analysis and Proposal assignment will prepare students for (2) the Major Research Paper.
NOTE: the preliminary assignment/proposal for the paper asked us to examine 4 newspaper articles and extract a thesis after assessing the articles. I am going to include the analysis and links to the newspaper articles for you. I will also give some references I think should be used. In other words, you are just doing #2…writing the research paper
As well, the thesis is:
The degree of waste management and water quality access in Lusaka Zambia and Stockholm Sweden can be linked to the degree of democratic accountability and participation in those countries.

The Professor’s Instructions:
The assignment should be approximately 10-12 pages or 2500-3000 words ? not including bibliography and map(s)/table(s)/illustration(s). Your paper must include a minimum of six academic sources and the four news items analyzed in the first assignment. Please note that an academic source is a scholarly writing that is reviewed by peers (Books and Academic Journals). Reference must be made in the body of each paper to all the sources cited in the bibliography. Please attach a bibliography to your essay providing information on the source material you have used.
The best papers will: (1) use the selected geographical dimension and two Global Cities to make and support a focused argument or idea; (2) make reference to a broad range of credible academic sources and news items in presenting the selected comparative analysis; and (3) be well written, with solid organization, sound grammatical structure, clear citations, and full bibliography, and flawless spelling.
Some useful tips from the Professor:
1. Work toward clarity, depth, and specificity:
define how you will address your topic; how you will evaluate or assess; and
what structure you will use to convey these ideas clearly IN THE FIRST
PARAGRAPH of your final paper. (Pro tip: Show this paragraph to someone
who is not taking this course and ask them to tell you if they can easily
understand what specifically you will address in the paper.)
2. Choose a specific ASPECT of your
geographical dimension to focus your argument and analysis and explain WHY this
aspect is crucial for understanding your topic, and HOW it tells us something
important about the issue. For many of
your topics, this may be specific policies, particular events, or defined
spaces (neighborhoods, districts, etc.) within the cities.
3,Keep your focus closely on both of your
cities. Pro tip: in geography, we often
discuss geographical SCALE as an organizing concept, i.e. global or national
scale processes often have particular effects on the local scale, and vice
versa. Using this language to explain
how, for example, neoliberal globalization influences decisions to privatize
services or infrastructure within cities may be very helpful
4.You should also explain why you have
selected the two cities and the geographical dimension ? that is, what is
the basis of your comparison: are the cities very different, or very
similar? How are the outcomes of your
geographical dimension locally specific?
What does looking at this geographical dimension tell us about each
city? What does each city tell us about
the geographical dimension? ( my rationale:Lusaka is a rapidly growing sub-Sahara region city with many peri-urban settlements. Its municipal government is not able to keep up with the demand for public services such as solid waste management. This is illustrated in Chisunka?s (2012) newspaper article which describes makeshift garbage dumps blocking drainage facilities. Stockholm, on the other hand, is a northern European city identified as the first Green City in 2010 (Brunn et al., p. 208). Sanati?s (2009) newspaper article makes reference to Stockholm?s ground dirt as ?much too clean to be harmful? (para. 12). Such outward contrast between the cities establishes an interesting foundation for a comparative analysis whose thesis is proposed to be; The degree of democratic managerial and financial autonomy municipal officials in Lusaka and Stockholm possess can be linked to the amount of waste management and the quality of water supplies in those cities.)
