a league of their own

In the course thus far, we have discussed gender stereotypes, double binds, and different expectations that people have for men and women. Nelson (2015) reviews the literature on gender roles and trait expectations in terms of leadership. For Essay 3, you will watch A League of Their Own. In your tightly written, synthetic essay, you will explain how the film presents gender and leadership. There are both male and female characters in the film who act as leaders in different ways. Discuss the leadership styles in terms of gender role and trait expectations. Do the characters conform to those expectations? If so, in what ways? If not, why not? Finally, in your essay, evaluate whether A League of Their Own was an appropriate title for film and story.

Please plan in advance how and when you will be watching this film. A League of Their Own can be rented on Amazon.com for $5 or less plus tax. If you plan on buying it, order it now so that it arrives in time for you to complete the assignment.
Your essay should be 1.5-3 single-spaced pages in length. You should NOT put spaces/lines between paragraphs, and the margins should be 1″.
Your essay should contain a beginning (intro), middle (arguments/evidence supporting thesis statement), and end (conclusion).
Your introduction should contain a clear thesis statement. The reader should not have to guess what your position is. I expect to see a clear and concise thesis statement in the first paragraph.
Sometimes people confuse “short” essays with “easy” essays. This short essay should be tightly written (get rid of unnecessary words, e.g., “I think that…”). Grammar and spelling will be evaluated.
Excellent essays contain a solid internal structure and evidence. Evidence is used to support the thesis statement. You should incorporate examples from videos, readings, and/or the films to address the essay topic. For this particular essay, it would make sense to identify scenes or dialogue from the movie as your evidence. Take down quotations, for example, that help bolster your point.
Upload a Word document to D2L before the due date. Assume that your computer is going to break down for an hour at 4PM on October 17 or that your car is going to break down while you are driving home to upload it. In other words, plan in advance. Upload it early to avoid any technological or logistical disasters. Have a Plan B (e.g., name of a taxi company if car breaks down, know where another computer is if your personal computer breaks, keep a backup file of your document on a flash drive, etc.) so that you can make the deadline.
