A Good Man is Hard to Find

A Good Man is Hard to Find
Paper instructions:
Inform your audience through analysis and close reading of the text about one device, stylistic element, or idea used by the author that you find significant to the meaning of Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find. These elements may include narration, symbolism, theme, characterization, or context. Examples of theme are:

–the themes of race, family, old vs. new

–the themes of goodness, mothers and sons

Remember that if you choose a topic that is difficult or challenging to you, this will be of greater use to you as you pursue understanding in your close reading, analysis and research.

Start by asking yourself a question about your chosen topic, and this will be a working thesis—For example—How does the character of the grandmother explore southern-ness in a unique way? Why does it matter to the text? What is O’Connor showing through her obsession with the past?

Please keep in mind that, “Expository writing, or exposition, presents a subject in detail, apart from criticism, argument or development; i.e., the writer exposes a subject by analyzing it. Such writing is discourse designed to convey information or explain what is difficult to understand. Exposition usually proceeds by the orderly analysis or parts and the use of familiar illustrations or analogies.”(Lewis and Clark College web site, lcsc.edu)

This is a type of writing that seeks to bring both facts and insights to the reader.
This essay should be two-three pages in length and follow all relevant MLA guidelines. This means double spaced text, one inch margins, name and page number on each page, and proper citation of all quotes and secondary sources. Use standard 12 pt font, such as Times New Roman or Arial. Please remember that you must use at least one academic secondary source for this paper.

Remember that if your paper does not meet the basic assignment requirement of length, subject, or references it will earn a D or an F, as C papers meet all basic requirements of the essay.
