Imagine you have your own child and you notice that her/his urine turns from yellow to black after a couple of minutes. Through the years, you also notice that her ears, areas of her/his face, hands, and eyes begin to turn gray or even black (see photos below). What is going on? Is this a bacterial infection? A virus? Eventually you found out your child has Alkaptonuria – a genetic condition. What is alkaptonuria? Why those symptoms? How common is it? How complicated is it? Is it lethal or does it have a cure? What is it about our genetic material or our genes that would make a human have alkaptonuria? Does it come from our parents or grandparents and then we inherit it? Why would anyone would have alkaptonuria in the first place? If this is a mutation, why would a mutation cause alkaptonuria and not another condition? What would you do if you have alkaptonuria or some relative or close friend? Do you think this condition makes the person who has it a disabled person? Why, or why not? about alkaptonuria and write an essay about it. The questions provided above are to motivate you to investigate about this topic; you do not need to answer them one by one. The essay must be at least five paragraphs long, and each paragraph must contain at least five sentences (you can write more than five paragraphs and more than five sentences per paragraph if you wish to do so). The content of your essay must be written entirely in your OWN words. Use in-text citations in parenthesis, APA style, if you paraphrase information from other authors. Paraphrasing is not copy-pasting or copying and changing a few words from other authors’ writings – it is writing it in your OWN words to explain the authors’ writings. Only when necessary, you can quote, but these quotes do not count towards the last tally of the number of paragraphs and sentences required from your OWN writing. You must cite at least three references you used to investigate about this topic at the end of your essay (use APA style). You must submit your assignment using SafeAssign; your assignment will not be evaluated if it is not submitted through SafeAssign. This assignment can be submitted twice, and only the last submission will be evaluated
