Document Formatting:

Total length: approximately 500 words (2 pages)
Typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins
No cover page: Include your name, the course code, my name, and the date in the top left-hand corner of the first page
Quotations and paraphrases of any critical theorist needs to be followed by the associated page number from the reading using MLA formatting
A reference page with the source for your chosen current even/work of fiction in MLA
Student uses clear diction, relatively free of spelling or grammatical errors

Part I. Summary of the Critical Theory (100-250 words)

In this section, you will show that you understand the theorists basic argument by identifying one important quote or concept and describing what the quote or concept means in your own words.

Any quoting or paraphrasing of internet/secondary sources in this section will result in a grade of zero in the assignment.

Part II. Analysis of Culture (250+ words)

In this section, you will show how the quote or concept youve just summarized is applicable in contemporary society by:

Referring to a current event using an article from a credible* news source
OR

Describing a work of entertainment, such as a television episode, a single film, a character or plot point in a video game, a social media post, a short story, a photograph or another example of visual art

2. Connecting the specific ways the quote or concept from the critical theory relates to your chosen current event or work of entertainment. Why would your theorist think this current event or work of entertainment is significant?

There is a lot of freedom in this part of the assignment, as long as you keep in mind that you have to support any claim with evidence or explanation. You are creating a critical analysis of contemporary culture, using a foundational theorist, and your goal is to practice crafting a couple of concise paragraphs in support of your main point.

*Credible: While it’s generally fair to critique the bias of any news source, the goal for this assignment is to present a current event with a baseline of objective journalism.
