Vignette One
This assignment focuses on vignette analysis and direct application of course concepts to the persons and situations presented in the vignette for each question. All discussions must take into account legal and ethical considerations, as well as issues of culture and diversity that may pertain to the situations presented below. Culture and Ethics are covered in both course texts. You are encouraged to use other cultural resources as needed.
Use and reference the reading assignments thoroughly in an integrative discussion. All assignments MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style, and written at graduate level English. You must integrate the material presented in the text and cite your work according to APA format. Use of the internet and the University Virtual Library is encouraged, but the majority of your work should be based on the reading assignments.
Please keep your responses focused on what is presented in the vignette. Do not add information but use your creativity to support what you see in the vignette as written. Avoid elaborations and assumptions.
Your assignment should be 2 pages per vignette plus a title and reference page
Vignette One
During your first phone contact, Pete, a 35 year old man of Latino-American descent, tells you his family needs to see a therapist very soon. His 14-year-old son, Tim, is in a special education class at school. Tim was recently arrested for shoplifting. Pete is concerned that the boy is a bad influence on the other children, who are Susie, age 7, Jimmy, age 5, and Jenny, age 3. You schedule an appointment for Pete, his wife and Tim, but only Pete and Tim show up. Pete explains that his wife, Monica, was too depressed and stressed out to come and that she wants Pete to handle the situation anyway. In gathering more information about the family, you learn that the household includes the nuclear family, and Monica’s mother, who has recently moved in due to poor health and will be living with the family indefinitely. This is a second marriage for Pete, who also has an adult son from the previous relationship. While you are talking with the family, the father’s cell phone rings. It is Monica. Pete relates that Monica wants the therapist to understand some things, and that she has tried her best to understand her 14 year old son, but he is stubborn, disrespectful and willful. During the relating of this information by the father, Tim mumbles that mom didn’t come to the session because she was passed out on the couch. Pete replies that mother is doing the best she can, and she has three other children and an elderly mother to take care of. Tim states that he often watches the younger children for his mother, while she “takes a nap”. Two other times during the session, Monica calls on the cell phone to add her opinion. Pete does not seem to mind this and agrees to pass on her thoughts to the therapist.
