Paper details:Prompt is the file called unit2 writing assignment.

This was copy from email. “This next unit is all about *OPERA* (basically, just a play with a lot of singing)! You’ll learn about the two basic types of singing used in opera: *aria* (tuneful, melodic singing used to convey emotion) and *recitative* (more speech-like singing used for dialogue or to further the plot). You’ll also be introduced to two composers— a German named George Frideric Handel and an Englishman named John Gay—whose operas were popular with different types of English audiences. I’ve attached one combined pdf of the readings for your Unit 2 writing assignment *(due Tuesday [4/5] at 11:00)* in the following order:

• [pdf pg. 1]: _Music in the Eighteenth Century_ (Rice, 88–93)
• [pdf pg. 8]: Addison, “On Italian Opera” (Haskell, 3–6)
• [pdf pg. 13]: Milizia, “On recitative and the aria” (Fubini, 255–259)

John Rice’s piece [pdf pg. 1] will provide you with a bit of background information. You’ll read about 17th-century England, and you’ll be introduced to two genres of music: *ballad opera* and *Italian opera.*

Harry Haskell’s _The Attentive Listener_ [pdf pg. 8] is an anthology that contains various reviews and criticisms of music throughout history. The piece you’re reading by Joseph Addison (a 17th/18th-century English writer) is all about his thoughts on Italian Opera. Make sure you read the first paragraph for more background.

Enrico Fubini’s _Music & Culture in Eighteenth-Century Europe_ [pdf pg. 13] is a sourcebook that contains various key writings about 18th-century music. The excerpt you’re reading by Francesco Milizia (an 18th-century Italian art historian) discusses the differences between *aria* and *recitative*—what they sound like, how they function in opera—and _of course_ includes his thoughts on both.
Here’s the Unit 2 Assignment prompt and some suggestions to guide your reading:

Summary:
• *Addison*: What does Addison think of Italian operas being performed on the English stage? Does he like this? Dislike this? Why?
• *Milizia*: Summarize Milizia’s descriptions of both “aria” and “recitative.” What does he personally think of each singing style? “
